Chemical-free cooling tower treatment for data centers that never stop
Elgressy EST keeps chiller condensers and cooling towers free of scale, biofilm and corrosion while they run. No shutdown cleaning, higher cycles of concentration, and no treatment chemicals on site.

Why data center cooling water is different
A data center looks like any other 24/7 cooling load, but the priorities are not the same. Water treatment has to fit an operation that can never stop and reports its efficiency to customers.
No shutdown window
Tier III and IV facilities cannot take a tower offline for descaling or acid cleaning. Surfaces must stay clean while the plant runs.
Redundancy means idle water
N+1 and 2N designs leave cells and pipework on standby or low flow, where biofilm, Legionella and under-deposit corrosion start.
PUE is a public number
Even a thin layer of scale on condenser tubes raises chiller energy, and that shows up directly in the PUE you report.
Water use (WUE) and water security
Cutting make-up water means running higher cycles of concentration, which raises scaling risk. In the EEC, water supply itself is a resilience issue.
How EST protects your cooling system
EST (Electrolysis Scale Treatment) by Elgressy is connected side-stream to the cooling tower basin. Water circulates through a reaction tank where a controlled DC current does the work that chemicals normally do.
- Scale control: high pH at the tank wall precipitates more than 30% of the calcium in the reactor, before it can crystallise on condenser tubes or fill. The remaining calcium stays dissolved.
- Self-cleaning: a patented automatic scraper removes the precipitated scale and flushes it out. No manual cleaning of the reactor.
- Disinfection: oxidants formed at the patented nickel-oxide titanium anodes control bacteria and algae. Free chlorine is held automatically at about 0.1–0.2 ppm.
- Corrosion control: controlled operation at a maximum of 2 mpy, without aggressive low-pH water.
Because EST runs side-stream, the cooling system never depends on it: servicing the EST unit does not interrupt cooling.
Built around the numbers data centers report
For a data center, water treatment is a risk and sustainability decision first, and a cost decision second.
| Your priority | How EST supports it |
|---|---|
| Uptime | Scale is removed in the reactor while the plant runs, so there is no need for shutdown descaling or acid cleaning. Side-stream design means EST maintenance never touches cooling. |
| PUE / energy | Clean condenser tubes keep chiller approach temperatures and energy use at design values. |
| WUE / water | Cooling water can often run at higher cycles of concentration, which lowers bleed-off and make-up water. |
| ESG & site safety | No treatment chemicals to deliver, store, handle or discharge near critical rooms. Drain water is chemical-free and can be reused. |
| Legionella & hygiene | Continuous on-site oxidant production controls bacteria, algae and biofilm, including in towers with standby cells. |
| Visibility | Optional SCADA with real-time pH, conductivity, current, voltage and alarms. The link to your control room can be wired, Wi-Fi or both. |
Chemical program or EST?
Conventional chemical treatment
- Continuous chemical purchases, deliveries and storage on site
- Dosing errors and pump failures go unnoticed until scale or corrosion appears
- Periodic offline cleaning when deposits build up
- Chemical-laden bleed-off to discharge
- Cycles of concentration limited by scaling risk
Elgressy EST
- No treatment chemicals to buy, store or discharge
- Programmable, measurable and monitored online (ABB – AWT)
- Scale removed continuously in the reactor, fully automatic
- Chemical-free drain water, reusable for irrigation or flushing
- Higher cycles possible, lowering make-up water
Proven in critical 24/7 buildings
Our work in Bangkok
SCADA impression (optional) – EST at the United Nations, Bangkok (illustration, not live readings)
United Nations, Bangkok
EST has treated the cooling towers at the United Nations building in Bangkok since 2013: clear tower water, full flow through 13-year-old fill, 13-year-old chiller piping with no corrosion, and a new SCADA system installed in 2025.
Samyan Mitrtown, Bangkok
EST treats the cooling towers of this large mixed-use development in central Bangkok.
Elgressy systems are installed in thousands of sites worldwide. In Southeast Asia, Water Treatment Asia (Aerial Lift Asia Co., Ltd.) has been Elgressy’s exclusive distributor since 2010.

Frequently asked questions
Can EST be installed at a live data center?
Yes. EST connects side-stream to the tower basin, so no intervention in the cooling system itself is needed.
What happens if the EST unit is stopped for service?
Cooling continues normally. EST sits outside the main cooling circuit, so servicing it never interrupts heat rejection. The system can also be designed for partial cleaning, so the water stays in equilibrium.
Does it work for new builds as well as retrofits?
Yes. The system is modular and simple to include in a new design or to retrofit to existing towers.
How do we see that it is working?
Performance is monitored online with pH, conductivity, current, voltage and alarm data, and Elgressy’s support team can assist remotely. A SCADA link to your control room is optional: wired, Wi-Fi or both.
Does EST help with Legionella control?
EST produces oxidants continuously and keeps free chlorine at a low, controlled level, which supports your water management plan for bacteria and biofilm.
